PRS Partners with The American in World’s Richest One-day Rodeo

$2,000,000 will be on the line March 2, 2014, in Dallas, TX

August 22, 2013 - Dallas, TX - The Professional Roughstock Series (PRS) will partner with RFD-TV to help bring about the richest single-day event in the history of rodeo.

THE AMERICAN, a $2-million dollar single-day rodeo event will take place March 2, 2013, in Texas’ AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. The event will bring together the largest collection of superstar talent ever assembled in rodeo’s seven events. Each event will pay $100,000 to win.

Additionally THE AMERICAN will be open to any athlete wishing to compete against the world’s best by earning a spot through an open qualification system. Should a qualifier win, they will take home a share of a $1-million bonus. The PRS will be the sanctioning body for the open qualifying of bareback and saddle bronc riders.presserMcu

“Everything we’ve done with Professional Roughstock up to this point has been to bring about positive change to the sport,” said Spud Whitman, PRS President. “We really want to do things differently for the cowboys and for the fans. This really fits into the mold of what we’ve been trying to do all along.”

The PRS will host five qualifying tournaments in conjunction with their regular tour stops beginning in Salina, Kansas on October 19th. The qualifying tournaments will be open to any riders who wish to pay an entry fee. The top five finishers in bareback and saddle bronc from each qualifying event will advance to the semi-finals at Resistol Arena in Mesquite, Texas, February 22nd. The top five finishers from the semi-finals will advance to THE AMERICAN and be eligible for the $1-million bonus payout.

In addition to the qualifying tournaments, the top three riders in the PRS world standings after November’s 2013 PRS World Finals in Rapid City, SD, will receive automatic berths into the semi-final event in Mesquite. Both the qualifying events and the semi-final event will pay money to win. Information regarding entry details and a breakdown of the payouts will be released very soon.

"I think the PRS is the perfect association for us to partner with." -Randy Bernard President CEO Rural Media Group Rural Media Group President and CEO Randy Bernard sees the PRS as the right fit to be the roughstock sanctioning body. “I think the Professional Roughstock Series is the perfect association for us to partner with because they have the best riders and stock competing on a weekly basis. So it wasn’t hard for me to figure out where we wanted to go,” said Bernard. “And another important factor is that the PRS is seen weekly on RFD-TV. With the potential to reach 42-million viewers every week, they can see what the cowboys are doing and I think PRS fans and RFD-TV fans are really gonna love this format.”

“I think this could be a huge turning point for the game of rodeo,” said Larry Mahan, 8-time PRCA World Champion. “And I think it will be great for the concept of Professional Roughstock. For anyone to have a chance to win $1-million dollars in one day, who would’ve thought it.”

It’s a sentiment echoed by rodeo’s all-time top earner and 2-time PBR World Champion Justin McBride. “I think it’s a game-changer,” McBride said. “I think in the roughstock events there’s a great chance that someone could come in and win this thing. If you’re thinking about entering a PRS qualifier, there’s not doubt you should do it, especially for a chance at a million dollars. This would be the place to do it.”

For bull riders the PBR will sanction the qualifying process in a similar fashion to the PRS. Qualifying tournaments will begin in October and run through January.

In addition to the PRS and the PBR, THE AMERICAN will have events sanctioned by the United States Team Roping Championships, Better Barrel Racers and the Ultimate Calf Roping Series. THE AMERICAN will be broadcast live on RFD-TV and its networks, including RURAL TV and RURAL RADIO on SiriusXM channel 80.

cowboysStadium“We are honored this event is being held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Since we opened the doors in 2009, this stadium has hosted hard-fought battles between some of the toughest athletes in the nation. It’s only fitting THE AMERICAN continue the legacy of entertainment and culture in, what we believe is, one of the nation’s premier sports venues,” said Stephen Jones, Dallas Cowboys Chief Operating Officer.

Information on ticket sales for all PRS fall schedule events is available on the official PRS website at Entry and ticket information specific to the qualifying tournaments will be coming soon. Tickets go sale for THE AMERICAN September 16th.
